Your Website Looks Fine. So Why Isn't It Getting You Clients?

5 min readFebruary 18, 2025

A good-looking website and a website that brings in business are two completely different things. Here's the difference.

Your Website Looks Fine. So Why Isn't It Getting You Clients?

A client came to me recently with a website that honestly looked pretty good. Clean design, professional photos, decent copy. And yet โ€” in 14 months, it had generated exactly three enquiries. That's not a design problem. That's a conversion problem. And most Indian business websites have it.

The Thing Nobody Tells You About Websites

A website is not a brochure. A brochure is meant to look good when someone's already interested. A website has to work on people who aren't sure yet โ€” people who landed from Google, a social post, or a recommendation โ€” and move them from "just looking" to "I want to talk to these people." That requires a completely different approach than what most web designers deliver.

The 5 Things Your Website Is Probably Missing

A clear answer to "what do you do and who is it for" within 5 seconds. Not a fancy tagline. A plain sentence that tells me if this is relevant to me.

Social proof that's specific. "Trusted by 500+ clients" means nothing. "Helped a D2C skincare brand in Mumbai grow from โ‚น3L to โ‚น40L monthly revenue in 8 months" means everything.

A reason to contact you today, not eventually. Urgency doesn't have to be fake โ€” it can be a limited availability notice, a free consultation offer, or a relevant resource. Anything that makes reaching out now feel better than doing it later.

A fast, mobile-first experience. 70%+ of your visitors are on their phone. If your site takes more than 3 seconds to load or buttons are too small to tap, you've already lost them.

An actual next step that's easy to take. Not just a "Contact Us" page buried in the nav. A button, visible without scrolling, that says exactly what happens when you click it.

The Harder Truth

Most websites are built to impress the business owner, not to serve the potential customer. The owner wants their best photos, full service list, awards, history. The customer wants to know three things: Can you solve my specific problem? Have you done it before? How do I reach you? The websites that convert answer those three questions as fast as possible and then get out of the way. Everything else is decoration.
